Clarisse, a twenty-year-old physics student, is asked by dean Gordon to investigate a time travel project the university partly funded with Samuel Barkley, a successful filmmaker. Samuel, maimed in a bear attack, will do whatever it takes to turn back the clock. The sharp-witted Clarisse realizes it’s a hoax, orchestrated by the tycoon’s disgruntled family. Emma and Thomas, Samuel’s popular offspring, offered Clarisse a substantial amount to play along with the deception. She agrees because her friendship with Emma grew into something more. The students recreate historical events to convince all benefactors that the time machine works. However, it’s not just Samuel and dean Gordon that need convincing, but also Alonso, an infamous Mexican drug lord, who borrowed Samuel money for the project. The tricksters carry out the last stage of their plan when dean Gordon’s head arrives in a duffel bag. Unfortunately, Clarisse is not part of the plan.
